Frames of Faith Image Stories
Photography and my faith - images and perceptions of creation by noticing visual points of time and space.
Photography is about frames. The frame initially is empty. A photograph fills in the blanks.
The photographer is saying "look at it THIS way"!
We first look, then see and finally notice. Agree or....?
We start photographing families. How are you collecting and preserving your family images?
Describe the moods and relationships you see with siblings and each family member in your photographs.
There's a story/relationship in every single image or series. Describe the relationship/story you experience.
Each image can also serve as a prompt to a story. As a writer, which photograph sparks your imagination?
A photograph is about time and place. The time may be from history, years or decades before our time now.
A photograph also is a slice of time - a moment chosen by the photographer to close the shutter. Location
means the geographical specifics, the weather, the angle and distance between the photographer and object of attention.
All of time and place is God's story including the subject and viewer as well as the photographer.
All photographs are autobiographical based on the perception and imagination of the photographer.
When photographing people, there is a relationship established between the photographer and subject.
It is normally more difficult to photograph people who already know each other!
Making documentary records/photographs of people, a photographer needs a combination of self confidence and
humility. Confident that you have the ability and desire to make a photograph. The photographer needs self awareness with
non threatening humility and respect for the subject.
As a work of art or as a documentary record, the photograph brings meaning to the viewer.
That perceived meaning may or may not have been the intent of the photographer.
