My friend is a gracious host and true neighbor two blocks away. I was sitting on his porch trying to take photographs of hummingbirds. I swiveled in my chair with my camera ready and found this image. I made two exposures with this expression and two more when he smiled. The pensive stare is much more compelling than the smile! Originally this was in color but it works much better in monochrome.

I sat for over an hour across from Clarence at a small cafe. After a while he just ignored me as I made many images with my small point-and-shoot camera. Originally the extensive series was in color, but they gained dramatic impact when sharpened in a sepia tone.

I was asked to document the work of an organization serving homeless families. They were pleased to be asked to be in front of my lense as not many people had given them this kind of attention. The single father and his family had an obvious loving bond.

Nurturing men was a theme I noticed across cultures from the South Pacific through Central Asia. Even men holding hands while out for a walk was a common sight.

This squat position is a favorite of men all over the island. I could do it then when I was flexible. The long hand rolled cigarette with strong local tobacco is a favorite.

The local residents around the Kyhber Pass are fearsome. This is the main artery between Pakistan and Afghanistan and has a history of danger.

I rarely ask permission to take photographs in public places. However men in the Khyber pass neighborhood usually carry rifles as did this protective father. I gestured a request to photograph him and his daughter and he said yes. Note that his eyes are probably blue or green. Marco Polo and his fellow European travelers came through the region via the Silk Road for centuries and intermingled with the local tribes.
